Indonesia’s firefighting efforts and haze: an update for Kajang parents
Firefighters are working on the ground and in the air, but regional haze risk remains. Here is what the reports mean for families planning school and after-school routines.

For parents in Kajang, haze can make tomorrow’s routine difficult to plan. This myKiwi blog brings together a dated regional update and practical reminders for families from SJK(C) Yu Hua, SJK(C) Sungai Chua and nearby communities.
Regional reports do not replace school notices. This article does not announce a closure, reopening or revised timetable for either school, or confirm that myKiwi may operate during any particular closure.
Update checked: 17 October 2026, Malaysia time. This is a dated briefing, not a live alert. Check the linked official sources for changes.

Regional haze risk remains elevated
ASMC displays Alert Level 3 for the southern ASEAN region. Showers may ease haze locally, but prolonged dry conditions sustain risk elsewhere. Its outlook gives no firm end date for the haze.

Helicopters and ground crews work together
Indonesia’s forestry minister reported 50 water-bombing helicopters across six priority provinces. Dense smoke can restrict safe flying, leaving ground crews to continue suppression when aircraft cannot operate.

Palembang’s dry-ice trial is preliminary
BNPB reported better airport visibility after a dry-ice dispersal trial over Palembang. Trials were scheduled through 18 October, followed by evaluation. This local result does not establish that the wider haze crisis is over.

Malaysia is ready to assist
Malaysia reaffirmed its readiness to help. Its earlier offer included one aircraft, three helicopters and 52 personnel; technical arrangements were still being discussed. Readiness is not confirmation that those assets have arrived.
Three distinctions worth explaining to children
A calm conversation can turn a confusing headline into an opportunity to practise thoughtful reading.
Effort and outcome are different
Firefighting can continue while smoke remains. Ask your child what a report actually confirms, rather than assuming one successful operation resolves everything.
A trial is not a finished solution
The word “trial” means an approach is being tested. Encourage children to look for what was measured and what remains uncertain.
A regional update is not a school instruction
Keep the wider picture separate from the message sent by your child’s own school. Dates and locations matter.
Recognising the people working on the ground
Aerial photographs show only part of firefighting. Ground teams also work in difficult conditions. Use the photograph below to discuss teamwork, responsibility and appreciation for emergency workers, without encouraging children to approach a fire.

Four practical checks for Kajang families
Before changing the next day’s learning or transport arrangements:
- Read your school’s latest official notice and confirm which date, class and session it covers.
- Confirm pickup and care arrangements directly before travelling; do not assume a school closure means another centre can open.
- If online lessons are assigned, check the timetable, device, charger and learning materials in advance.
- Follow current official air-quality and safety advisories, and confirm any changes to the child’s routine with the responsible adults.
