Tuesday, 10 November is the key date for working parents: Selangor schools following KPM’s Group B calendar have an additional school holiday, which may not match parents’ work schedules.

The weekend, Deepavali and the additional holiday form a four-day school break from 7–10 November. Families at SJK(C) Yu Hua and SJK(C) Sungai Chua should also check their school’s notices for assignments, activities and transport arrangements.

Understanding the Festival of Lights

Deepavali, also known as Diwali, is a Hindu festival associated with light overcoming darkness and good overcoming evil. Tourism Malaysia describes celebrations involving lamps, decorations and time with loved ones. Customs differ between households.

For children, keep the explanation simple: “Deepavali is a special celebration for many Hindu families. People may decorate their homes with lights, spend time with loved ones and share food. We can learn about their traditions and respect how different families celebrate.”

Arrange care around the days adults will work

Confirm practical details early, especially for Tuesday, 10 November.

  1. Compare calendars

Mark school holidays alongside each adult’s actual work commitments.

  2. Agree on the caregiver and hours

Confirm arrival, collection and who is authorised to collect your child.

  3. Check meals and transport

School-term routes and meal arrangements may change during a holiday.

  4. Share essential information

Give the caregiver emergency contacts and relevant dietary or care instructions.

  5. Keep a backup plan

Identify a trusted adult who can help if work commitments change.

Let children understand the plan

Explain where your child will spend the day, who will be with them and when they will go home. Stories, art and conversation can help children explore the festival without a packed schedule.

Share food and conversation thoughtfully

A festive snack can open a conversation about family traditions and ingredients. Check dietary needs before sharing food; the photographed sweets illustrate the topic and are not a myKiwi meal offering.

Keep the break enjoyable and leave time to rest

A balanced day can include a short reading session, one creative activity, a shared meal, free play and quiet time.

  • An outing need not fill the whole day. Leave space for rest.
  • On Tuesday evening, help children check schoolbags, prepare uniforms and return to their usual bedtime.
  • Ask: “What did you discover during the holiday?”
