Starting primary school at six: growing in character, growing in confidence

A new school brings new lessons, friendships and responsibilities. At myKiwi, we believe good education helps children grow as people as well as learners.

For a family preparing for primary school at age six, the move from kindergarten is a big step. There are new classrooms, teachers and classmates to get to know, alongside new opportunities to practise independence and self-discipline.

Parents naturally care about how their child is learning. During this transition, character matters too: how children speak to others, look after their belongings, respond to difficulties and ask for help. Small, everyday moments are opportunities to grow.

Six values we encourage at myKiwi

At myKiwi, we accompany children as they learn to practise these values. They grow through patient guidance and everyday opportunities, rather than expecting children to get everything right at once.

  1. Respect teachers and classmates

Listen when someone is speaking and recognise that other people have ideas and feelings too. Respect begins with the way we treat one another.

  2. Communicate politely and share

Practise saying please, thank you and excuse me. Taking turns and asking before borrowing help children learn to share thoughtfully.

  3. Build responsibility and self-discipline

Looking after a schoolbag, putting materials away and following a simple routine give children small responsibilities they can practise each day.

  4. Develop good learning habits

Prepare what is needed, listen to instructions and try a task one step at a time. Asking a question is part of learning, not something to feel embarrassed about.

  5. Show gratitude and care

Notice the people who help us, say thank you and consider how a friend might be feeling. Kindness can begin with a small offer of help.

  6. Face difficulties with confidence

Encourage children to say what feels difficult, try again and ask for support. Confidence can grow when their effort and progress are recognised.

Growing in character through shared activities

A shared drawing, a group task or taking turns with classroom materials gives children opportunities to listen, communicate politely and help one another. These small everyday moments let children practise kindness and responsibility while building the confidence to contribute their own ideas.

Small ways parents can practise at home

Age six can be a meaningful time to begin building good habits and character. Choose a manageable habit and practise it together, leaving room for your child to learn at their own pace.

  • Pack the schoolbag together, then invite your child to check one item independently.
  • Use polite words in everyday conversations so your child can hear and practise them.
  • After school, ask about one kind action or one new thing they tried, as well as their schoolwork.
  • When something is difficult, talk about the next small step and recognise the effort to try again.

Good education is more than good grades

We hope children grow into people who are respectful, responsible, confident and caring. At myKiwi, learning and character belong together: we accompany children as they develop good habits, discover their strengths and learn to care for others.

First, give children room to grow. Then, help them discover what they can become.
